Personal Branding

Your image and reputation are fundamental in branding. Through effective personal branding, you are able to control the way that the public views and perceives your brand; therefore, this is an essential step in the process of promoting your brand.

As mentioned by Forbes Magazine, personal branding is the difference between “Who are you? And “Thank you for being here” in your career. It  does not necessarily mean that you have to be a social media influencer; it has to do with promoting and solidly establishing what it is that you stand for.

You may for example be offering something of legitimate value and significance; however without powerful personal branding, what you are potentially providing will not make its way to the appropriate target audience for your brand.

It is as a famous proverb by Mae West says, “it’s not what you say, but how you say it.” The way that you are promoting something is more important than what you are actually promoting itself. A picture is worth a thousand words, and what better way to promote yourself and your personal brand than through a photo itself?

Here at Brio Five, we will help develop your brand strategy and promote your brand in the most successful and effective way: through empowering personal branding photography.

Success- go get it

Personal Branding Defined

Personal branding is all about the way that you promote your brand. Specifically, it is the practice of someone marketing him/herself and his/her career as a brand.

It has to do with not only establishing the impression and established image that you or your brand has in the minds of the public, but it also has to do with the way that you continue to express your brand identity.

Here at Brio Five, we believe that it is not about how you look, but about how you feel on the inside. The way you feel on the inside will express itself through a photo and will instantaneously reflect onto the image of your personal brand.

Why is personal branding important?

The base and success of personal branding has to do with inspiring others; what powerful brands do is build relationships and inspire followers. Inspiration occurs when your already existing or potential followers, are able to experience the value of the message that you are defining.

Inspiration is important because it creates positive feelings towards your brand and drives others to follow and trust you. You could be branding yourself, a good, or even a service; whatever it is that you choose to brand, effective personal branding will grant you numerous advantages.

Personal branding builds credibility, inputs trust, allows you to build significant connections and create brand awareness, grants your brand authenticity, and most importantly, personal branding boosts your confidence.

The success of your brand depends a great amount on the way that the public will perceive it. If your brand has a positive connotation to it, it will be more liked; this way, you will be more successful in promoting your brand and creating brand awareness.

The way that Oprah was able to portray herself on her talk show and the way that she very powerfully interacted with her audience was extremely inspiring. She made her brand meaningful and stood especially strong on “speaking her truth,” something that she herself claims, is “the most powerful tool we all have.”

Oprah is known to have openly discussed her childhood traumas. Through this, she emphasized the importance of genuinity within your personal brand. Being authentic, honest and true are important when trying to portray and maintain a positive image towards your target audience. That is because in our world today, especially, people like transparency.

On a separate note, it is important to acknowledge that Oprah is known to have resisted calling herself a brand. Oprah insisted that she was a person and did not want her brand name to make her lose the connection that she was developing with fellow humans.

This is where you have to establish what you want: are you more interested in promoting yourself, or are you more interested in promoting the good or services that you are providing through your brand?

By personally branding herself, Oprah was able to connect and build a sense of trust with her audience, on an especially deep level, allowing her to truly show the world who she was and what it was the she was standing for.

This is the reason why a personal branding photoshoot could truly change your brand identity towards the best; because you are showing your audience who you, yourself, are.

Through personal branding and by establishing the above mentioned qualities within her brand, Oprah was able to become the extremely empowering, inspiring and accomplished women that she is today.

The Importance of Branding Online

Every time a customer comes across your product, they are left with an impression of your brand. Your brand reflects your promise to customers and their overall experience from your products and services.

When it comes to engaging with potential clients, the importance of branding online plays a significant role. It provides a platform to reach a broader audience that wouldn’t otherwise be reachable.

But before we discuss the importance of branding online, it is important to first understand the basis of branding.

What is Branding?

A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another. If the consumer (whether it’s a business, a buyer, a voter or a donor) doesn’t pay a premium, make a selection or spread the word, then no brand value exists for that consumer.” – Seth Godin,  author of Linchpin

If you’re looking for an actual definition of branding, you can find many. Well, just enough for you to get confused because of the vagueness of this concept.

Perhaps creating an illustration will allow you to understand the concept a little better. Let’s take Coconut Water, for exampleCoconut water has been considered a thirst quencher alongside conventional sports drinks.

But when you envision Coconut Water alone, you will likely think of the same clear liquid inside of a coconut that is already being sold at grocery stores. The question becomes: how will you sell the exact same product with so many competitors?

That’s where branding comes in. And as Marty Newmeier from The Brand Gap says,

“Your brand is not what you say it is, it’s what they say it is.”

BENEFITS OF BRANDING ONLINE

Increases Recognition

When people hear about your product and are unsure about it, chances are they will do a quick google search. They go online to find service providers and compare one product to another. This is a great way to get noticed and engage further with possible clients.

Increase in Demand

Branding online boosts sales. Your customers are so mesmerized by their overall experience from purchasing the product with undeniably great quality, prompt service to customers and so on that they are willing to buy more.

Not only that, they might even broadcast it on Facebook and recommend it to their friends. Thus, a naturally occurring word-of-mouth can steer dozens of new customers your way.

Reduced Advertising Costs

Online branding allows you to extend your reach at a much smaller cost. In the beginning, it may seem like you are spending more, but if you take into consideration the scale at which your online presence can reach, it is actually extremely cost-effective.

Once you have created your online branding presence, consumers will eventually do the advertising for you by constantly sharing your website with their friends. And thus, savings sets in!

Headshots vs. Professional and Branding Portraits

Photographs can be broken down into a series of categories. Within these categories are headshots and portraits. These two are often used interchangeably and the difference between them is quite subtle. For example, A headshot could be a portrait, but a portrait is not necessarily a headshot. For this reason, people are thoroughly confused about the difference between headshots and portraits. In this article, it’s stated that headshots are the new handshake of today’s world, but do headshots really elevate what you’re trying to convey personally and for your business? Let us set the record straight on headshots vs. professional and branding portraits so it can help you decide what type of photo session would fit best for you.

What’s the difference?

A Headshot is literally a “shot of one’s head”, sternum up with the focus being on the face and a simple solid color backdrop. Since it’s a concise portrayal of your face, you may be wanting to use these for your business cards or profile pictures in your CV or on your social media account where you can market your brand.  Its sole purpose is to show your face so your audience will know who they will be doing business with.

A portrait, on the other hand, requires great attention to detail and includes more of the subject’s personality. It allows a photographer to dig deep and get to know your brand and the kind of audience that you want to work with. While headshots require less time and preparation, the options for your professional and branding portraits are limitless. You can have close-ups or facial shots, upper body shots, or environmental portraits.

It’s important to understand the difference between headshots vs. professional and branding portraits in order to represent your brand appropriately. Your headshots clearly show who you are, but your professional and branding portraits show what you do that elevates your character. Check out my post on how to not let your brand look unprofessional.

Authenticity is important and a portrait should depict your brand in a natural environment. As an entrepreneur, you are clearly working hard at defining your brand, looking for more visibility and engagement, and probably investing a lot in marketing. Let’s work together and make it even better with compelling portraits that elevate and expand your brand to clients.

Finding Confidence in front of the Camera

Standing in front of a camera can be intimidating for anyone. But if you’re a business owner, it’s no secret that you have got to get out there and jump on the social media bandwagon or you’ll miss out on potential growth opportunity for your business. People love connecting to businesses on a personal level and social media is the perfect platform to do just that! It’s a great way to show people you care about how they think and feel. So get ready to step into the spotlight with these tips on how to look like a natural by finding confidence in front of the camera.

The Trick!

Get Yourself Comfortable.

Finding confidence in front of the camera is about more than just you’re physical look; it’s a state of being. Before facing the camera, you have to get yourself energized. Be sure to fuel your body and mind with proper nutrition. You might want to hit the gym or try a yoga class. It’s important to focus on everything that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Choose outfits that you like, get your hair done and put some makeup on. Place yourself in an environment that makes you feel confident and strong.

Fake it ‘till you make it!

Are you not used to having all the attention directed at you? Well, you are now, so suck it up and pose. Kidding! But really, the second you decided that you need to do this for your business, the time for feeling insecure went out the window. “Fake it ‘till you make it!” is what they say. Having someone you know take the pictures, given that he/she has the know-how, is a great option to relieve your anxiety. An even better option is to hire a professional. Not only do they know their way around the camera, but they can coach you properly to make you feel and look more confident on camera. Regardless of who is taking the photo, it’s vital to talk to the person behind the camera. Let them know you don’t feel comfortable and why so that they can make adjustments to ease what’s troubling you.

Be your Cup of Tea!

Not feeling beautiful enough? Let’s face it, everyone has different tastes and preferences. There is no way you can be everyone’s cup of tea, but YOU should be YOUR cup of tea. Nobody can teach you to love yourself and accept your flaws, but trust me in this: nothing is as beautiful as someone who knows they are not perfect, accepts that fact, and proudly wears those flaws. Have your hair styled by a professional, hire a makeup artist, get a facial to revitalize your skin, but for heaven’s sake don’t change yourself. You want to let the world see YOU, not somebody else, because you are worthy to be seen. Everybody is.

Learn to like how you look.

Throw away your irrational negative thoughts and conventional ideas of beauty. Stop comparing yourself to others. If you cannot love and accept your present self, you will not be able to love and accept your future self either. Spend some time in front of a mirror getting acquainted with how you look. Change any negative thoughts about your appearance into positive, proactive affirmations. You have the power at any given moment to choose to love your body, so do it. Show your body you love it by nourishing it and moving it daily. Through practicing these acts of self love, you will begin to learn to like how you look at any given moment, and be a hero when finding confidence in front of the camera!

If you want to train yourself to create a positive new habit, check my post on How to Create Positive Habits and Stick to them. You may also want to check this video out where Peter Hurley and psychologist Anna Rowley have devised a simple way to overcome your fear of the camera lens.

What is an empowerment photo-shoot?

Have you ever looked at an image of someone and felt motivated, charged, inspired or ready to do something? Well, congratulations! You stumbled upon an empowerment photo and may ask what is an empowerment photo?

Empowerment is defined as the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights.

Translation: an empowerment photo makes you feel strong, confident and able to accomplish anything you set your mind to.

What makes an empowerment photo?

A true empowerment photo will make it’s subject look confident, strong, authentic, relatable, powerful, knowledgeable. It can create energy and give the subject a purpose, mission and/or cause. There’s a sparkle in the eyes of the subject boasting both wisdom and action. You see that they really know their stuff and are ready and able to do anything they set their minds to, and so you can too! The ‘can do’ and ‘I’m ready’ attitude in an empowerment photo can make the audience contagiously feel their empowering attitude and take action.

Empowerment Photo

What does an empowerment photo look like?

The subject in an empowerment photo will often have their shoulders squared off to directly face the viewer. They’ll be looking directly at the viewer to fully engage and captivate their audience. Mouths are often closed, with a serious expression or slight grin. A full smile can also be very effective depending on the type of smile, overly wide and cheesy smiles aren’t very empowering, yet a bit cheeky and confident smile can work magic.

The eyes should have a concentrated look, with a hint of a soft smile in them. I often suggest my clients “smize” smile with their eyes to fully capture this power, wisdom, and radiance in their empowerment photo.

How to pose for an empowerment photo:

Hands at the hips in a ‘Superman’ pose can also create a beautiful empowerment photo, especially when the final image is cropped so it doesn’t look cliché. Crossed arms can work well but caution must be taken with the intensity in which they are crossed as they can also close you off from your audience. A strong side stance can work beautifully, especially with a confident over the shoulder smile.

Hands are often left out of female empowerment photos as they can look clumsy and be a distraction. Save hands for beauty or lifestyle shots instead. For men, hands can be powerful in an empowerment photo but consideration must be taken with their position as they can make the photo look hard and standoffish. When in doubt, leave the hand out!

How does an empowerment photo relate to my world?

When I look at an empowerment photo I get a tickle in my chest, the kind that ignites anticipation, excitement, and a serious can-do attitude! I see the energy beam from the image and it speaks directly to me. Think of the times when you were about to purchase a product or service and the individual selling to you didn’t seem like they knew what they were doing. Did you make that purchase or hesitate, not exactly sure as to why?

Now think of a time when you were about to purchase a similar service or product and you felt the individual selling was really confident and on their game. That they knew exactly what to do or teach you to get you to the next level. Much easier to pull the trigger and make that purchase wasn’t it?

A strong empowerment photo can communicate your passion, knowledge,  and confidence to your audience and sell you faster than words could!

Who needs and empowerment photo?

Entrepreneurs, professionals, executives, coaches, instructors, salespeople, speakers, athletes, medical professionals, anyone who has a leadership role or is an influencer, they all would directly benefit from an empowerment photo. The best part is even if you are not in these fields, an empowerment photo could be the perfect thing for you. Mothers, divorcées, graduates, people in new life stages or experiencing changes, a new look, or anyone just needing a confidence boost all would benefit from an empowerment photo as well.

Show the world your power, confidence, and radiance in an empowerment photo for professional reasons or simply any reason, it will change the way you feel about yourself each time you gaze upon it and may change the life of someone else too!

Use Photography to Brand Your Company

A picture is worth a thousand words. Use photography to brand your company because it can become the best marketing strategy. Photography can make or break the way potential clients view you just from looking at the pictures that are on your website, social media, etc. Utilizing a professional photographer can help craft that professional look that is a must-have when it comes to marketing your business. To read more about how a professional brand photographer is beneficial, visit our post. Professional portraits are necessary because they looked polished and legitimize expertise in your chosen industry. In the age of smartphone photography, professional photos stand out.

Photography can help you illustrate what type of client you want to reach. Visuals are usually more easily understood than words in most cases. There is an emotional connection to your company that images can help create.  The companies visuals should convey to the public your personality, aesthetics and most importantly- your message.  Your images should be carefully curated to represent exactly the message you want to get across. The Internet is already saturated with images so your image must stand out to get the attention of clients.  When choosing your images, take into consideration what exactly you want to attract and what you’re trying to communicate. This will support your brand identity. Brands that have strong photographs are more likely to be successful, usually because people are more likely to remember their images.

HOW TO BRAND YOUR COMPANY

1. Use Content Creation to Visualization

First, you must think of the visuals you want to use to tell your story. A suggestion Deposit Photos, a company that provides stock photos and vector images and videos for usage, suggests creating a mood or visual board using pictures from magazines and other publications to help illustrate the concept you want to convey. Include pictures that inspire you and illustrate the way you want to brand your company. Then think about what is the message of your company and how will the images illustrate them. Visualize your brand and company and think about what you want your audience to take away from the images you put out. When it comes to images of you, think, “How do I want my client to see me and how can I demonstrate it?” Having these questions answered will make it easier to carry out your vision for your brand.

2. Curate Your Photography

Once you have your images, make sure the chosen images reflect the message you want to convey and represent your brand and yourself.  This part will be the most difficult, but hopefully, your photographer took images that illustrate your message. Some suggestions would be to ask are, “does this photo look authentic and capture my true self or my brand’s essence?”  Think what is the message you are trying to give and what is the purpose for your image. For example, if you are a doctor or are in an industry where you must be friendly, trustworthy and warm, does the image capture that? Likewise, if you are in an industry where you provide coaching, empowerment services. Do you look like you are confident and know what you are talking about? Having a confident air in the eyes and a strong, but not harsh, jawline can convey that you are strong and powerful without looking unapproachable.

3. Be consistent

The ultimate goal is to have people see a photograph and automatically think of your brand and see you the way you want to be seen. Having images that are consistent is one of the ways photography can help with branding. As stated in the last paragraph, if you want to be seen as friendly, you must convey that in every image. When your images are not consistent, it could confuse your audience and your message is lost to them. At Brio Five our mission is to create images that fully capture your radiance and essence.

More are experiencing women empowerment to start their own businesses. In the past two decades, female businesses owners increased from 5 percent to 38 percent, according to an article on Forbes. Employment from female-owned businesses has also increased while employment from men businesses has decreased. However, women are not bringing in the same revenue as men. Women still are trying to catch up to be on the same playing field as men. A confidence gap between males and females could be to blame for this as more women as less likely to go after what can make them become successful. As a result, feeling empowered, especially by other ladies, can make girls feel like they can meet their goals.

Women Empowerment can Change Business Forever

Times are changing and women now feel more empowered to create careers that will satisfy their souls, not just create an income, taking advantage that now they have the freedom to go after what they want. Emma Featherstone published in an article in The Guardian on that states that factors such as cultural biases and discrimination against ladies in leadership roles have discouraged women from becoming entrepreneurs. Society has given women little control over their careers, bodies and important decisions that have an impact on their daily lives. Slowly, ladies are trying to take control of their own destinies. Ph.D philantrophist and artist, Cheryl Saban makes a living by making her own crafts in her store and studio in Los Angeles.

Cheryl Saban - Women Empowerment Matters

With so much more women owning businesses, women empowerment matters, especially females supporting other females. Ladies get a bad rap for bashing other women instead of supporting them, however, society’s treatment of women can only change when other women demonstrate how to treat other women. Fortunately, these days, that attitude is all but eradicated, as women are open to supporting other women, as they are familiar with the struggles they must go through. When women support other women they are more likely to be successful as they feel supported by their fellow women and they feel that they are working together instead of working against each other.

Empowering women to go after what they want is also beneficial to the economy. Women entrepreneurs are an untapped job source. Forbes states that employment by women-owned business has increased 18% since the recession. More jobs in a world where many people are struggling to find one are excellent. In contrast, employment in men-owned business has actually decreased. In 2016, there were many campaigns to encourage support for women businesses, for example, Forbes reported that Dell’s Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Elizabeth Gore, launched #whatWEneedtosucceed — which asked the President and Congress to help women entrepreneurs grow their businesses and it received much attention from the media and social media.

Women make up around half of the population and an empowered woman will want to be her best self and demonstrate it to the world. Many young girls do not aspire to be CEOs or business owners because there are not enough role models for them to look up to. An empowered girl boss could go beyond and serve as inspiration for another women entrepreneurs as well as they can see that they could accomplish for themselves and also learn from their wisdom. Professional Branding Photography of Women EntrepreneursIn the year 2016 women entrepreneurs currently hold positions  in 11.3 million businesses in the United states. With the accessibility of social media marketing, user-friendly website creation sites, branding tools galore, and manufacturing at the click of a button, this number is accelerating daily, especially in Los Angeles. From 2007 to 2016, there has been a 9% increase in new national business ventures, in women-owned businesses that number increased to 45%, which means women-owned businesses increased at a rate five times faster than the national average. In 2017, many more women entrepreneurs will begin to take their first leaps into building the foundations of their business dreams.

Why Women Make Better Entrepreneurs

Forbes’ David Prosser published an article on “Five Reason Why Women Make Better Entrepreneurs than Men”. This article states that women are more likely to invest profits in long term sustainability, become better calculated risk takers, are obviously more ambitious, and are “less prone to overconfidence,” which is because men have more testosterone than women. Women are biologically more sensitive, thus tend to care more about their employees and customers. Having a woman running a business is a sure way to sustain happy employees and customers.

An example of a successful women entrepreneur is Janice Bryant Howroyd, the first African American woman to start a billion dollar company. She started with $900 in her pocket and with the goal to start a business that would help others find employment. Now her company is the largest female minority-owned employment agency in the country.  She deliberately employs other women because she knows they are more able to resonate with her business and cause. Starting a staffing company that actually helps people find jobs shows how compassionate women can be through business. She branded her company, niche, and ethos accordingly.

Women Know What Other Women Want

Claudia Volpi - Entrepreneur of Superga Women's SFWomen also know what other women want (women are some of the biggest consumers in America). Take for instance the half a billion dollar valued company Vera Bradley co-founders Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley Baekgaard. These two friends started by borrowing $500 from their husbands to start making bags in Baekgaard’s basement. These two entrepreneurs noticed a lack of feminine beautiful luggage, and wanted gorgeous luggage, and decided to fill that need. Now over 3,000 stores carry their accessories.

Why This is Our Year

Starting a business in 2017 is easier than ever.  Starting a successful business is the hard part.
